DIU
The island of Diu, situated near the Indian coast of the Arabian Sea, is the last remains of the Portuguese colonial system. This once a powerful community of Catholics, today comprises of barely 200 people, who speak Portuguese amongst each other, and form an insignificant percent of the
total population of the Island.
Even though the island is defined by completely Catholic characteristics, Diu today is populated by Hindus and Muslims, and is completely surrounded by the Indian State of Gujurat, where persecution of Christians is not uncommon. At the island, on the other hand, all three communities live in accord with each other, that is exceptional in today’s political constellation of South Asia.
